“Alive in Joburg” is a glimpse into how brilliant “District 9″ could have been.Textured, balanced, thought provoking, visually distinctive. D9 in contrast was shallow, focused on easy laughs, and gross out gags, and deeply problematic portrayals of apartheid and race. (via cal)

Not the first time Peter Jackson has taken a potentially fascinating concept and dropped a degrading “heart of darkness” racial charicature into the middle of it. Even if you discount LotR, the “natives” in King Kong were totally over the top. Probably won’t be the last, either.
Yeah, got me wondering about what effect the white flight from South Africa to NZ (which was the fantasy of almost all the white South African I knew when I was there) had on the Kiwi popular imagination.
