I’ve been telling myself that someday I’m going to make it to Scott’s NY New Tech Meetup, ever since he mentioned it this Summer.

But boy do I wish I was going tonight apparently there will be a demo of

Firefly (decision-support application)

Um, you mean like Pattie Maes’ Firefly, that hottest, sexiest, most buzzworthy, proto-dotcom spin off of the Media Lab? (complete with rockstar founder). The one that was bought, and killed by Microsoft?

Of course, now in our wiser, more cynical age, who would be dumb enough to pour their metadata into a closed system? To trust a company to safeguard the gates of their community?

Just kidding.

Also demoing: apap.us, locl.us and movie.us (Apparently .us has arrived. Or at least someone is hoping so.)

Boston: Last Week’s Meetups

I didn’t do a very good job of advertising last week’s meetups, but just so you know, you missed the inaugural meeting of Boston.rb rising, phoenix-like, from the ashes. Next meeting is Oct. 4th (first Tuesday, also known as Ruby Tuesday), and I think I’m on the hook for some, as yet unspecified “tech talk”.

Also the first (only?) Web 2.0 meetup, which was a bit “schmoozy” for a term that I think of as capturing a back to our roots aspect of the Web, but was full of good people including Brian (finally!), David, the other David, and Steve. Antonio couldn’t make it, something about actually releasing software (so Web 1.0!), but he finally has a blog, so now I can link to him anyway.

Boston Ruby Meetup

Having never successfully attended a meetup, I thought I’d try my hand at organizing one. As Boston seems to be lacking a Ruby user group I thought maybe a meetup might be the first step. And I’m a success! My note to comp.lang.ruby seems to have successfully kicked off a meetup…..in Houston.

But if you’re interested in maybe doing something in Boston, Meetup.com has scheduled the first meeting for a week from Thursday (Apr 14th). I’m debating as to where to hold it still (my naturally inclination would be down in JP, maybe at Junebug, but I have doubts on my ability to entice folks out here). Current top choices are Trident on Newbury, or Toscanini’s in Central Sq.

Boston’s Very Own Red Brigade

sidenote: Perl has PUGs, Python has PIGs, but apparently Ruby has brigades, as in Boston.rb. And really isn’t a Ruby Brigade just a fancy way of saying a Red Brigade? My kind of language.
